Getting around

Stortford Fields is just off the A120 which links directly to Junction 8 of the M11 for Cambridge, approximately 4 miles away, and south to the M25 and east London. It's 40 miles to the centre of London and train services run daily from Bishop's Stortford Railway Station to London Liverpool Street, taking about 40 minutes. Epping Underground Station is 18 miles away, giving a direct link to London's West End. There are local and regional bus and coach services and for international travel Stansted Airport is only 8 miles away.

A trip to the shops

Bishop's Stortford has both leading High Street stores and smaller, family-run independent shops. Jackson Square Shopping Centre boasts nearly 40 stores, including Joules, Fat Face, Next and Sainsbury's and for local goods and produce there are regular Farmers, produce and craft markets. Within minutes of Stortford Fields you'll find a Tesco superstore and the town also has a Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Aldi. Just 10 miles away, in Harlow, you'll find The Harvey Centre with more than 90 retailers, and the open-air, Water Gardens Shopping Centre with nearly 30 top stores. For some serious city shopping it's just a 40 minute train trip to London.

Taking time out

Stroll along the River Stort in Castle Gardens, or explore the remains of Waytemore Castle. Enjoy live theatre, comedy, film, or music at The Rhodes Arts Complex, also the home of the impressive town museum, and unwind and eat in one of the town's many historic pubs and restaurants. Bishop's Stortford has a wealth of sports clubs including golf, rugby, bowls, cricket, swimming and squash, and a Canoe Club based on the River Stort. For indoor sports and fitness visit the popular Grange Paddocks Leisure Centre, and energetic youngsters have their own skate park. If you love woodland walks, the National Trust's medieval Hatfield Forest is only 6 miles away.

Education

Hillmead Primary School is within easy reach of Stortford Fields and for senior pupils there's Bishop's Stortford High School, a mixed comprehensive with sixth form facilities;the Hertfordshire and Essex High School and Science College for girls aged 11 to 18, and boys aged 16 to 18, and also St Mary's Catholic School a mixed, secondary school with a sixth form. The independent, co-educational, Bishop Stortford College caters for pupils aged from 4 to 18 years.
